"Big Al" Liebmann

"Big Al" Liebmann became involved in funny car racing back in the 1970's. He assisted on entries such as the Shady Glenn, Boston Shaker, Fireball Vega and cars fielded by the legendary T.V. Tommy Ivo. Al went on to become a partner in the Shady Glenn AA/FC camp.
In 1990, Al was instrumental in obtaining the NEC sponsorship for longtime funny car campaigner Gary Densham. Along the way, Al discovered his "second childhood" when he became hooked on hot rodding. He quickly became involved with two high profile projects designed/produced by George Barris/Jerry Kind. Al is currently the proud owner of a '36 Dodge 5 window coupe and a '40 traditional Ford sedan. A personal milestone was achieved when Al was chosen to attend the Grand National Roadster Show "Year of the Deuce" event. His '32 Ford 5 window coupe was chosen as a "Top-Ten" pick by Street Rodder Magazine in 2006.
An IT Telecom account manager for NEC Corporation of America by trade and a freelance photographer for www.hotrodhotline.com leaves Al with precious little free time. However, returning to active competition with a legendary funny car was just too good of an opportunity to pass up on. Al will be working closely with George Reidnauer in helping to market the newly formed team and assist in maintaining the Frantic Ford Funny Car.
Freddy Frey
Following the normal eastern tradition Freddy started racing in 1960 with an A/S ’59 Chevy. After a season of racing in the stock body ranks, Freddy decided the powerful 348 cubic inch Chevy would perform better in a lighter car, so he opted the factory sedan for a 1948 Chevrolet coupe in 1961. The vintage stovebolt ran remarkably well, but soon gave way to a more sophisticated combination in the form of a chopped and channeled C/A 1935 Ford truck with an injected Chevy 283 engine. This car saw Freddy through the 1964-66 racing seasons, but more importantly, it set the stage for his first venture into fuel racing.
By 1967 Freddy was completely addicted to fuel racing, so when Charlie Greer approached him with a new concept he immediately channeled all his experience plus considerable financial backing into what was to become the first funny car on the east coast.
Although successful in theory, the car did not become a force to contend with, so after two seasons of this early attempt the project was forsaken for more conventional fuel racing in the form of a AA/FD.
1969 found Freddy teamed with Bill Flurer and Sarge Arciero in a front-motored 426 car known as The Crazy Elephant. This forerunner of the now famous Jade Grenade was campaigned successfully on the east coast for part of a season.
After a brief hiatus, Freddy came back with a new car partnership that included Eddy Careccia and Sarge Arciero with a 392 powered dragster. This car won several east coast dragster circuit meets plus runner-up spots at the AHRA championship race in Bristol, Tennessee and the NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida.
Upon retiring from racing Freddy has kept busy buying and selling cars, boats, and horses, tending to his farm, attending select drag races, sleeping in his hammock by the pool, living on a diet that would kill most men, raising macaws, dogs, cats, raccoons, and grandkids, collecting social security, watching NHRA on television and not liking what is going on there.
He is an AARP member in good standing.
Freddy is back for 2011 and looking forward to returning the Frantic Ford Funny Car to the winners ‘circle.
Jim Fox
Upon retiring from the sport, Jim continued on with his occupation as a highly skilled machinist. High honors were bestowed upon him when in 2008 he was inducted into the Drag Racing Hall of Fame for his vast accomplishments in the sport.
Officially retired, Jim returned to his native state of California
(home to scenic
wildfires, tropical mudslides and awe inspiring earthquakes). With the impending return of
the car that Jim made legend, we hope to lure him back east for the inaugural debut of
the Frantic Ford nostalgia funny car. It would only seem fitting to have the man that
started it all standing there with us on the starting line.
Though not actively involved in the day to day operation of the new car, Jim will always be considered an integral part of this team and the "father" of the Frantic Ford AA/Fuel Coupe.
